Texans know how fragile the power grid can feel when severe weather hits. Families want to know the lights will stay on, hospitals will have reliable power, and outages will not leave neighborhoods in the dark. Modern battery energy storage systems (BESS) are built to support exactly that goal by strengthening the grid and improving reliability during extreme conditions.
Texas faces extreme weather year round, and the electric grid feels the strain. Summer heat waves regularly push electricity demand to record levels. In August 2023 and again in 2024, Texas hit multiple all time demand records as temperatures stayed above 100 degrees across much of the state.
Winter weather can be just as challenging. During Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, extreme cold caused widespread generation outages and exposed how quickly supply and demand can fall out of balance. Severe storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes along the Gulf Coast add another layer of risk by damaging transmission and distribution infrastructure with little warning.
Unlike traditional power plants, battery storage systems respond in fractions of a second. When a transmission line trips offline or a power plant unexpectedly shuts down, batteries can inject power immediately. This rapid response helps grid operators maintain balance and reduces the risk of cascading outages.
During extreme heat events in recent summers, batteries on the Texas grid have discharged during peak demand hours in the late afternoon and evening. That support has helped grid operators manage tight conditions when air conditioners are running at full tilt and reserves are thin.
Battery storage helps protect hospitals, emergency services, water systems, and other critical facilities by buying time during grid disruptions. That time allows operators to reroute power, bring other generation online, or complete repairs. For communities, this can mean fewer rolling outages and shorter blackouts during major storms or heat waves.
In Texas, where wholesale power prices can spike dramatically during heat waves or unexpected outages, this flexibility helps reduce reliance on the most expensive, last minute generation. Over time, that helps limit price volatility during the moments when families and businesses are already under stress.
Battery storage helps keep the grid steady during storms, heat waves, and emergencies. For Texas families, it means power that is more dependable and energy costs that are less volatile when conditions get tough.
